Educational Benefits of Learning the Five Pillars

Learning about the Five Pillars can support a child’s spiritual, emotional, social, and academic development.

  • Shahadah supports identity, vocabulary, listening, speaking, and an understanding of belief and belonging.
  • Salah teaches routine, time awareness, sequencing, movement, mindfulness, and personal responsibility.
  • Zakah develops empathy, generosity, mathematics, money awareness, and an understanding of community needs.
  • Sawm encourages patience, self-control, reflection, healthy routines, and awareness of how other people may experience hunger or hardship.
  • Hajj introduces geography, history, mapping, cultural diversity, cooperation, equality, and the importance of following directions.

These topics can be explored through reading, storytelling, art, geography, mathematics, role-play, movement, discussion, journaling, and practical family activities.

When taught appropriately for a child’s age and ability, Islamic education can connect faith with everyday learning while helping children develop character, curiosity, discipline, compassion, and a sense of responsibility.
